Homework Session 1.2 - Learning with the www-factor

At the King William I College I started the Technology Enhanced Learning Course as a participant (and trainer). In this context, I develop a number of assignments over the next 18 months.

In this post the impact of one of the assignments of session 2, namely reading a number of research reports. In this post a summary of the next report.

Learning with the www-factor

In this bachelor thesis Jeroen Gerth he mentions the following principles for media education, ie: what components should be learned in youth:

  • ICT skills - To use of new media, the student must have good ICTvaardigheden. Below is the manipulation of the computer, cameras and other recording and communication means.
  • Information Skills - Information on new media like the Internet have different characteristics than information in traditional media such as books, magazines, newspapers, radio and in most cases the TV. It requires different ways of searching, finding, receive, read, evaluate and process and where appropriate communicate.
  • Copyright - With the advent of new media in education is plagiarism a growing problem. Because so much information available and work without much effort, is much cut and pasted without source references. A critical look and usability of information is desired.
  • Audiovisual literacy - New media also introduce a new literacy. Many details in the new media are in audiovisual form. A video or a picture too much information. There is an increasing use of image and sound that can "read" and the "letter" of the media is important.

  • Digital Identity - Another important aspect is the digital identity. Young people flocked to the internet profile on sites like MySpace and Partyflock and experiment with their identity. What are things to look for and how you show your digital identity and that of others?

Jeroen Gerth describes three revolutions in recent centuries have passed reveu: 1. printing, 2. electronic media and 3. from unilateral to bilateral communictie. Revolution number 3 is currently full to work.

In a statement clearly positions Jeroen Gerth the difference between traditional media and new media.

Obviously this difference has implications for media education in schools. In the last chapter describes a number of technologies Jeroen Gerth: Weblogs, RSS, Wikis, Social Bookmarking, Podcasting and it goes like last on media legislation and the role of new media in learning environments. For me a nice and clear overview of the possibilities.

  • So nice to find a review of my thesis for my bachelor degree. I hope that it helps with the road course. Meanwhile I am trying this content to put into practice in secondary education at a school where we work on a media learning line. Some points I would like to add after my Masters. Maybe I do have a new edition is about media education in new media. Especially the Internet is still in full development and the advent of linked data and the web symantische, raises new questions and applications for education.
