Numeracy at level 1 and 2

What struck me in recent years is that the numeracy of the students of the training Informatician (Bol-2) is really very lousy.

We spend a little bit of attention to electrical engineering, but only the base, because if you have ICT course working with electricity:

  • How many computers can connect to a meter box?
  • How do you ensure that you secure work (for yourself and your PC)?
  • How do you test whether a group provides electricity at all?
  • When you switch an electrician?

But these basic electrical engineering is very difficult to learn as students who lack basic numeracy. Possible desperate for readers, but the conversion from meters to 1 kilometer (1000) is very difficult for many students, the conversion from millimeters to 1 meter (1000) is still difficult, and converting to millimeters 1 kilometer is the standard answer 2000.

I am not even talking about converting from megabytes to 1 gigabyte and bytes. And certainly not about the use of formulas, such as U = I x R.

Coming to the training school we Informatician start with the (free) material Gecijferdheid12. The material looks refreshing in: introduction movies in which the necessity of what you must learn is noted (motivation) and insider activated, also start-skip buttons and keys to determine whether you can skip a chapter, and course materials themselves, et cetera.

I set free by the way, because the divisions within our ROC is free, but I do not know if that's also money for other ROC. For me a must for other ROCs.

I'm curious about my experiences when we really going to work, but for me we take a first step towards the possible mandatory testing of numeracy in 2009-2010? Besides Dutch and English.

  • Thanks vor the tip of the rekenvaardiheden know the miserable, how about a care that the difference between 100 and 1000th not know in milliliters, or a cook who can not share the recipe by 4 to 10 people so you are constantly eating. Numeracy thought a project of William's college?

  • More examples that really can not 8-) How is it possible that such cases occur in education, yet they all have their VMBO-advanced degree, but well I have often seen strange things in the transcript.

It is idd a King William I College project together with several other parties, but only heard here last week through an internal e-mail with the option to subscribe. So exactly how it came about, and whether there are charges, I do not know. You can request information on the website, I thought.

Success in the home stretch as flat for the holidays.
